Who can tell you better about preperation than those who did it and topped the exam? In his interview with Aglasem, Rohit Sinha reveals his secret to success. With a proper study plan with regular practice, he secured 14th All India Rank in GATE 2018 and you can do as well. First of we would like to congratulate you. How are you feeling right now and whom will you give the credit for your success?
I credit my success to my dad and my mom, my friends, and teachers who have helped me throughout. My dad always provides me the best of guidance towards the path to success, which motivates and pushes me to work hard.
Tell us a little more about your family?
My mother, Mrs.Gitu Sinha, is a housewife, while my father Mr. AK Sinha, is an engineer working with a major public sector undertaking. I have a younger brother, who will be appearing for his board exam this year.
Did you appear for IES (Indian Engineering Services)?
No, I am underage right now, but for sure I will try for it next year.
From where have you done your schooling and college? How was your school and college experience?
I did my schooling from Delhi Public School, Agra, and then went on to pursue B.Tech, in CE, from IIT Roorkee. The school was pretty good, it helped me shape my personality and have a good foundation on various aspects. Journey at IIT Roorkee was excellent. I got the opportunity to learn a lot. I met a lot of good and interesting people there.
About Preparation For GATE
How did you manage your GATE preperation with regular studies?
I made a proper timetable, in which I suitably divided my time. I set the priorities well in advance and worked accordingly. On weekends, I used to dedicate more time to studies, while on weekdays, I managed preparation with college.
When should a student start preparing for GATE and how should it be done?
For a student who is still in college, the best time to start the preperation is the 6th semester. Make a plan and divide the preparation into different phases. Next step should be to identify the sources from which the one needs to study and then diligently stick to the plan.
Students must practice previous year questions at least twice, at the same time subject tests from online test series should also be taken at regular intervals. Prepare your own short notes and keep revising them on monthly basis. In the month of January start practicing the full tests, while revising your short notes on weekly basis.
Do students need to join coaching institutes to crack GATE exam?
It varies from person to person. But test series are very important. One should go for at least 2 online test series. It helps to build accuracy, speed, and confidence.
Which books should one use to prepare for Aptitude section?
No books as such, online pdfs are available all over the internet. Practice previous year questions for aptitude for all branches. That is sufficient.
What are the things one should keep in mind while preparing for GATE?
Practicing the virtual calculator is an important aspect. One needs to be well prepared with the working of the calculator or it will be a trouble during the examination.
What was your analysis of the GATE exam?
It was a pretty balanced paper, covering the entire syllabus. Questions and concepts were not repeated this year, unlike previous years. The questions were more of conceptual in nature.
Any tips for the exam day?
Stay calm and try to maintain your accuracy. Do not try to revise anything on the day of the examination.

I have applied in various PSUs and intend to work for one of them.
